Two University of Salford lecturers and senior midwives won one of the UK’s top midwifery prizes at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Annual Awards, held in London on Wednesday, 27 January Kathryn and Helen developed a post-registration midwifery module aimed at improving obeserving women during pregnancy. Spotting these tell-tale signs can prevent women’s health from deteriorating during pregnancy. Their innovative module provided a strong collaboration between education, midwifery, nursing, obstetrics and anasethetics. In addition to their lecturing roles at Salford, Kathryn is head of midwifery/assistant director of nursing services at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, and Helen is a senior midwife at The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Cathy Warwick, general secretary of the RCM, said: “This award for Kathryn and Helen highlights the important, innovative and pioneering work being done by their Trusts and the University of Salford and I congratulate them both, their university and the Department of Health. “It is important for people to know that midwives are constantly striving for excellence regarding research. When midwives are given the resources, support and the freedom to develop their research and work, the result is better services, better care and better health outcomes for mother, babies and their families.” Kathryn Murphy said: “We are thrilled to receive this award and it has been a culmination of many months work and a lot of team effort.” Helen Hindle said: “We are delighted to receive this award and that the Department of Health saw it fitting to recognise our ground-breaking and innovative work.” The awards were held at the Royal Garden Hotel Kensington. Attending the ceremony was RCM patron Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne.
