Finding A Job

Towards the end of your training, your thoughts will swing towards trying to find a job. There are two ways to go about this – you can either wait for jobs to be advertised, or you can send ‘speculative’ applications (also known as letters of interest) to the trusts you would like to work in.

Many NHS trusts use the NHS jobs website to advertise their vacancies, but remember that some still do not. If you check the trust’s website, you should find a ‘Careers’ section (Jobs / Vacancies / Working for Us are alternative titles) and it will tell you in there whether or not the trust uses the NHS site or advertises jobs on their own.

If you register with the NHS Jobs website http://www.jobs.nhs.uk/ you can get all the midwifery vacancies e-mailed to you every day so you don’t have to go looking. If you’re checking individual trust websites, find out when their vacancies are updated (some are daily / weekly / fortnightly) and make sure you check regularly. Competition for midwifery jobs in some areas of the country is fierce! Sometimes trusts will close online applications after 1 or 2 days if they get enough applicants – you need your wits about you!

This section will help you to write letters, compile your CV, and fill in the dreaded online application forms. You should start to think about this around 3-4 months before qualifying. More advice is available on our forum – follow the link from the home page and ask away ;-)

Best of luck!
