Equipment For The Course

We all know that when you are about to go to university it is hard to know what stuff you are going to need and what you won't. You don't want to go out and buy loads of things and then not end up using half of it! So our members (most of whom are at university) have put this list together of what's essential at university and placement. Please do not go out and buy all these things as you may find that you won't use it all, this is just a guide to what you may find useful at uni or on placement.

 

Equipment at university which is essential

  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Address book - put all your drugs in alphebetical order with all relevant info alongside it. Easy to refer back to and can get tiny ones which fit in your pocket.
  • Suitable bag for carrying all your work and textbooks



Equipment on placement which is essential

  • Black pens (lots of - and never lend them to a doctor!)
  • Notepad, small enough to fit in a pocket
  • A diary to keep track of your shifts and hours
  • Comfortable shoes. Ask other students about uniform policies, most units will specify black shoes that cover the top of the foot and aren't holey, but most places won't pull you up. CROCS - may be permissable but a lot of units don't allow them, or frown on them. Don't spend a fortune on anything until you know it's OK, but good quality shoes are an investment.
  • A fob watch - a cheap one will do
  • A small bottle of alcohol gel may be useful to carry around on community. You might be able to nab one from the hospital, but they're not expensive to buy and the ones with belt clips, or holes for belt clips, are useful.
  • Small textbook for placement in case I need to look anything up: the Oxford Handbook of Midwifery or the 'Midwifery Essentials' series (especially the Basics one) are very good.
  • Scissors, but dont let anyone see you using them or they will be instantly borrowed and never returned.
  Pen torch for checking palates
